A Guide to Taking Care of Your Car in Lockdown
A Guide to Taking Care of Your Car in Lockdown
The pandemic has impacted the lives of millions of people and has forced the world to come to a standstill. Where you could once see cars everywhere you went and people honking thanks to rush hour, now you see clear roads and hear nothing. In fact, statistics show that in New York, the traffic on the road was 39% less in 2020 as compared to 2019.
Your cars are parked in your garage, and thanks to lockdown orders, you can’t take them out. In these times, it is important to keep your cars in good condition so that when lockdown ends, their engine will run smoothly. Here’s how you can do so:
Check the Battery
The battery is essential to keep the electronics of your car running. The car’s battery will run out of power over time, especially if it’s stagnant for months. You can use a trickle charger as this would help charge the battery over longer periods, preventing it from being drained completely. You could also disconnect the battery completely during the time your car is parked in lockdown. Then once lockdown is over, all you have to do is reconnect the battery and you’re on your way again!
Run the Engine
You’re probably making trips to the grocery store every couple of days to stock up on essentials. Even if you’re taking your car on those trips, the internal combustion engines are not designed for 10-minute trips to grocery stores. To function effectively, they need to be brought up to full operating temperature, which is not possible over short trips. So, go for a long drive or circulate your area a couple of times. The AA cars CEO also suggests leaving the engine running for 15 minutes or more to prevent the engine from flooding with fuel. This should help maintain your car.
Inflate the Tyres and Clean the Car
Your tyres will eventually lose pressure over time when out of use. You should check the pressure regularly and inflate the tyres to their maximum pressure. Make a point to clean the inside of your car—the steering wheel, control stocks, gear stick, door handles, and window switches. Giving it a good wash can protect it even when you’re not using it frequently.
